Topic: 1940 Mercury specific parts

1940 CONVERT    -- 01-11-2014 @ 1:23 PM
I'm about to get rid of a bunch of parts. They are listed with a picture link in the classified section. I bought a body manual and talked to a few people already. Does anyone know what parts are specific to this year and car. I don't want to get rid of something I may need.
Already know about. All 4 fenders, pedal assembly, window and door handles, WW motor, Grill, steering column, chatter rods, steering box and differential. What I would really be interested in the carb, transmission and distributor.

While many Merc parts are specific to Merc, those three are the same as for Ford. Your carburetor should be a 91-99, your distributor, to be absolutely correct, should be marked 68 on the tang, but will run slightly better if marked 11A on the tang. Not being visible installed, this small modification would not cost points if you enter for point judging on the Concourse. Your transmission could be any side shifter from '40 to '48.

If I counted correctly, photo 23 shows a shelf with the following parts for a 40 Merc:

outside door handles
trunk handle bases
escutcheon for coupe and convertible inside handles

There may be more, but that was just a quick look. Just about all body parts are unique to the 40 Merc and except for a few mechanical parts that you have listed, most other parts are used on the Ford as well.

Some of the parts that you show are difficult to acquire in good condition, like the distributors and carburetors. If the voltage regulators are original Ford, they are also difficult to find.

Thanks for the replies. I was wanting to keep a couple of spare distributors and carbs then sell the rest. I had extra inside door handles cast off the ones on the car. When a couple of people found out I had extra fenders they just wouldn't leave me alone. I did keep those. Grandma is just after me to get rid of some of this stuff that isn't needed. You guys should see the gasket sets. Probably more than a thousand. Everything you can imagine.

Does anyone have any idea what the carbs, distributors and generators should sell for? I have people wanting the 97 carbs and have no idea what to ask.

I just added 48 more pics.

Are these all the wrong transmissions? They look like top shift to me.

91-99 carbs are Ford-Holley carbs not 97 carbs. 97's are Strombergs not F-H. Not correct for late 38 to 48 ford or merc. 97's are worth as cores approx. $125-$175 depending on cond. 91-99 are worth from $25-$40 dep. on cond. Hope this helps. Dist cores are in the neighbor hood of $15-$30. ken ct,

You can click on the little double line in that post. I don't know why it appeared that way. I think I found some pics of a side shifter.

Thanks for the info. Any ideas on generator cores? I have a pile of axles also. I kind of got a whole bunch of this dumped on me. I have quite a few of the distributors, carbs and generators. If anyone is a rebuilder or lives close I would be willing to cut a deal. Central IL. All I really want is one or two spares that work.

I have rounded up the carbs. If anyone needs a specific stamping let me know. I found three 91-99 and will be keeping those. There are three complete 97's. Plus 2 extra top and 2 extra bases. Also looks to be 20 distributors and about 20 generators. If you know any rebuilders that would buy the lot of carbs, distributors, generators, axles, gaskets or transmissions please let me know. I'm not going to try to get top dollar. I work 2 jobs and don't have the time to really part this out.
