My coil is updide down at this time. To right it what will I encounter? Leery of going into the distributor!

I'm not sure what you are describing. A stock coil is mounted on a bracket to the left side head by two bolts to the case. The high tension lead exits the coil from the underside and goes to the distributor. The two small terminals on the top are connected to the distributor input and the other to the under dash resistor. A good depiction is on page 5-9 of the Club's 41-48 book. If it is mounted with the high tension cable at the top, you should be able to turn it over by releasing the two bolts to the bracket, flipping the coil, and refastening it. There should be ample high voltage cable to reach the distributor. If it seems too long, just put a loose knot in it. We used to do that to reduce radio noise, anyway. If you have a modern tubular coil, any mouning that allows the wires to fit is OK.

Thank you for such a detailed reply. Bottom line we put an up-to-date coil in. Someone told us it has to be right side up to cool properly. Glad we went to an expert. The wire would have been too short the way it is mounted.
Thank you

If you installed modern round coil, it probably has a resistor built in. If so, the original resistor should be bypassed, or the voltage will be too low. Most are oil filled, but can be mounted in any position.
