Topic: Stuck Trunk ...51 Mercury

I am inside the trunk of my 1951 Mercury Convertible trying to get the trunk to open. There is a metal box constructed around the lock assembly...I don't see any levers to push to cause the trunk to pop open. Do you have to remove this assembly to get to the lever or am I missing something here ? Would it be a better route to take the trunk emblem off and work through the trunk hole to lever from the outside ?

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

If you can see the latch/striker you should be able to use a screw driver and pry the latch loose from the striker.

  Thanks Triford

I was able to get the trunk handle assy off. The problem was the small lever on the lock cylinder had sheared away...there was nothing left to activate the bar that makes the latch release.

That little lever sounds similiar to the one used on the 52-53 Fords. Check with Dennis Carpenter as they have a lot of NOS locks and they may have one that will fit.

Thanks again. I tried Dennis Carpenter but I must say of all the parts suppliers I deal with, they are the least informed and less helpful company I have dealt with since beginning this hobby. If you don't have a part number, they can't dicuss squat. I think I have located a replacement ( used ) and I appreciate your help & suggestions.
