how is the spare tire fixed in the trunk? - '39 Merc sedan - I have lock device, a threaded bolt with an eye at the top fixed with a pin and spring into the top of the trunk - how is the tire held in place?

Fordmerc, I searched all of my Mercury literature for a good drawing or description of the spare tire mounting and could not find anything.

From the deep, dark recesses of my mind, I seem to remember that the bolt goes through one of the holes for lug studs and then a special nut that looks like 2 lug nuts welded together goes on the bolt. The lock goes over the special lug nut.

I think the 39 Merc sedan uses the same set up as the 39-40 Ford sedan. You have the pieces that are attached to the upper brace in the trunk, but you need the metal piece that pushes against the tire and attaches to the bolt with the spring. That bolt uses a standard size Ford lug nut. Sorry I don't have a photo of the piece that you need. I also checked the Green Book and it doesn't show it either. Then piece you need is made of stamped steel and from the side it has a triangular shape. I did find a photo of the bracket in the V-8 Club's 38-39 book. It's on page 3-46 and shows all the pieces for the for the bracket assembly.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion that the Ford was the same. Now I have to dig around or try some creative construction.

After seeing Tom Johnston's reply, I did some more research in the parts catalogs. The parts are shown on page 10 of the Green book (78-1492).

Tom, I checked page 10 of the Green Book and I think that part only covers the 37's,38's and maybe the 39 standard. My 40 standard tudor has the same parts for the spare bracket as those shown in the 38-39 book for the 39 deluxe sedan. On page 3-43 of the 38-39 book the bracket shown in the Green Book is noted to fit 38 deluxe tudor, fordor and convertible sedan. In these cars the spare tire lays flat on the floor under plywood shelf. It's the same bracket that I had in my 37 club coupe.

Tom, you are correct as usual. The correct clamp is P/N 91A-7047074 and is listed in the Body Parts catalog. There is no drawing of this part in the body parts catalog and it was used only in 39-40 on the sedans.

Here is an E-Bay item that the seller says is from a 1940 Ford Fordor.

Check it out and see if that is what you need.

Tom, good find. That's the same part as the one in my 40 tudor.

fordmerc, did you ever find a spare tire bracket? If not there are two on e-bay right now. Search under "1940 Ford" and you will find them both.

Maybe it's just because you asked a question about it on the Forum.
