The serial number shows very limited information pertaining to the engine. 53 = 1953 SL = St. Louis plant M = Mercury 116294 = the engine sequence number at the St. Louis plant for the 1953 model year, with the first engine number being 100,001 If you have the car, there should be a data plate on the driver's side door jamb. It will have more data to decode. Ken
