Topic: carb and dist

I am still trying to get the right stuff for my engine and now don't know what dist. or carb I need
My engine is a 1950 8BA 4" x 3-3/8" with a JR 400 cam and a single carb. My timing cover is aluminum and will accept the cast iron type dist. I want a distributor with both mech and vac advance. I guess I have learned that my cam will not allow just vac advance, and my old Stromsburg 97 carb will not work because of no vac port in it. Is anyone running a setup like I described and can tell me what I need. The car will be for street use only by a OLD man.

thanks

My advice would be to contact our Flathead Engine Advisor, Joe Abbin at P.O. Box 53296, Albuquerque, NM 87153 or roadrunnerengr@msn.com. He has much experience with stock and modified Ford Flathead V-8 Engines and should be able to steer you in the best direction to meet your needs.

The most common distributor for modification to the 8BA family is the GM distributor. This link shows how it's done. There are folks out there that sell them . It takes some trial and error to set the vacuum can to work on manifold vacuum but it has been done successfully.

Bubba at Bubbasignition.com and Charlie Schwendler (CharlieNY) were doing them but I don't know if they still do. It's easier to find this stuff on the HAMB site or Fordbarn.

try the gm dizzy conversion with a 97 that has had a vac port added to the throttle body we used to drill them and fit the tube in past years but now stromberg offer the same setup in a new carb or a replacement throttle body for yours it makes sense to use the factory item as it could take 2 or 3 goes to get the size and location spot on
