The carb may need to be modified to use the modern type power valve. The originals aren't available as far as I know. Charlie Schwendler can modify the housing to fit the late types so they don't leak. This is a link with his information.

The 8.5 valve was the standard valve when your carburetor was built. It will open when engine vacuum drops to 8.5 - 9 inches of vacuum allowing more fuel to flow..

In the past, all kits had a modern type power valve with a radius cast into the section where the sealing surface meets the vertical surface. This made getting a good seal impossible. Kits from Daytona Parts have a power valve that will seal correctly. Charley Schwendler ( cas5845@yahoo.com ) sells this kit with a metal needle valve and seat that works much better than the valve and seat that Daytona or other kits have.

I recommend that you send the carburetor to Charley, because he machines the sealing surfaces to make sure there are no vacuum leaks and the the power valve operates correctly. You will get back a carburetor that you can install and run as delivered.

If you are determined to rebuild the carburetor or rep0lace the power valve yourself, please test it for fuel leaks before you install it on the car. The way that I do it, is to fill the bowl with fresh fuel to a level that you can easily determine any changes. set the cover on the bowl and then let the carburetor sit over night. If the fuel level drops, the power valve is not sealed. A correctly sealed power valve will hold the fuel level for at least a week.
