I have a 1940 Mercury Eight Convertible. There is a large gap between the bottom of the hood and the top of the grill. Can anyone tell me how to correct that and close the gap? Also, both A pillars have snaps on them that In do not understand????? Thank You

I really can't tell why your grill gap is so large. My guess is that your hood is from a 1939 Mercury and that the hood ornament is also from a 1939 Mercury. I would need a photo showing more of the hood to be sure. The snaps do not belong on the A-pillar. Please post more photos of the car showing the side view and the dash board along with a view similar to the one that I have posted showing the grill and hood ornament on my car. The hood and trim appear to be 1940 to me. Here is the hood/trim on my 39. Perhaps a few photos of the hood open might help?? Also it looks as if your grill doesn't fit snug up against the fender, especially the upper part.

Your hood lock mechanism is 1939. Look at Tom's posted picture. You need a 1940 trim and hood lock it appears to me!!!

Note how the hood latch for a 40 continues down into the round dimple area of the grill and has no raised area for your finger to pull out like the 39 does. I am sorry I don't have the parts for our 40 Mercury at my shop yet to compare to our 39 but it looks as IF all you need is just the latch part of the mechanism. Thanks for the photos. They show that you have the correct hood ornament, with the wrong handle. The left side of the grill needs to be adjusted to close the gap at the point where the grill meets the hood. You may have to enlarge the slots in the grill to accomplish this. Using a Photoshop comparison of my 40 hood to your hood, shows a definite difference in the shape of the bottom of the hood. The center of my hood is about 1/2" lower than your hood. That is about the same difference as a 39 hood to a 40 hood. You may be able to see signs of where the 1939 hood trim holes were filled in. If there are these signs, it would be proof that you have an incorrect hood. I don't know of an accurate way to measure the difference. If you or Rockfla have an idea of how to do this, I will try to measure my hood. Tom

I used a plastic protractor to measure the angle of the lower front edge of the hood. It came out about 15 degrees up from the center of the hood to the front fenders. I believe that the 39 hood is 90 degrees. Tom
