Topic: Ram air or blower for 8cm -255 v8 ?

I ran my 51 Merc recently with the stock air filter off and was surprised at how much better it ran with noticeably improved acceleration. So much so that I was wondering if there is a blower for a flathead or a ram air. Not looking for a drag race set up ...just the smooth improvement with the air intake. Has anyone else had this experience ? Suggestions welcomed. Thanks .

Tracker, you might want to ditch the oe air cleaner and try at least a 6 1/2" mr. gasket air cleaner.this is what i have on my '37 21 stud flathead. it will fit 2 5/16-2 5/8 carb. opening. don't use one of those little 2" models does't breath well unless you have a 3 duece intake manifold. i believe the 6 1/2" mr.gs is largest setup out there that will fit the ford/holly 94 or the 97 carb throat. its some what mimics the filter area the oe cleaner does without the giganitic structure oil bath. i believe part # 1490 is the one. the filter #1485 replacement. when i got my '37 3 yrs. ago i put one of those 2 1/2" hot rod chrome air cleaners on didnt run well. if you get one of those 6 1/2" cleaner watch out for sharp edges on the mounting base!   Many thanks for the info Tom. Moving on it now. I was really surprised at the difference in performance with out the stock air cleaner in place. My engine is stock through and through and I don't plan to change that so the MR Gasket set up sounds good. When I get that in place I will report back the results. As always ., you are a wealth of great information & thanks.
