Topic: 1940 Merc oil pan mystery

This photo is of the right front corner of a 1940 Merc oil pan. It has an odd cutout that looks like it has a purpose but it leaks oil badly. Before I plug it off can anyone tell me why it is there? It makes no sense to me.
Thanks for any help on this.

That opening is part of the crankcase ventilating system. It is there to allow air to flow through the crankcase area to prevent pressure build up. It shouldn't be weeping too much oil unless the engine has excessive piston ring blow-by or the upper crankcase vent is plugged up.

Thanks for the info on this. Should there be a screen of some kind to keep dirt out of there?
