Topic: 1940 Mercury clock bezel / glovebox opening dimens

  Hi,

I've been thinking about putting a 40 Mercury clock in my 40 Ford. The mechanical has given out, fussed with it a number of times and I'd like an electric one. Could someone help me out with the opening dimensions please.

This is a link to the same question I put on the Ford Barn but got no responses.

Thanks,

Glen, I just measured the opening on the dash plastic cover for the Mercury glove box.

The opening is 3 1/4" wide and 2" high. Good Mercury clocks are also expensive and most of them are missing the fuse holder cover. I was looking for one a couple of years ago and the best price I could find was $80 with a $10 shipping charge.

Electrical clocks are more troublesome than mechanical clocks, because they have the same mechanism with the addition of the electrical wind components.

  Thank you very much Tom.

The 1940 Ford opening measured 2 1/2" X 3 9/16" wide. I thought they would be the same or closer.

Appreciate the tip on the workings. I didn't realize until last week that the electric drive keeps all the mechanical components.

I bought a used 40 clock for parts at a fair price and will take this approach for the time being.

Glenn, you can have your mechanical clock converted to quartz using a kit from:

https://www.clocksandgauges.com/quartz-conversion-kit.html

You might want to watch the video for the kit before deciding on the kit. You should call them before ordering the kit to make sure it will work for you.
