Topic: 1951 Mercury convertible window adjustment

  My 76 B convertible has the power window option ...the windows do not all raise back to the top at equal heights. The manual does not address this and I cannot come up with a solution. It looks terrible when the top is up and the window frames are at different heights. I see a cluster of three Allen head head screws in each of the door pillows that look like they may be related to adjusting the windows but do not have a clue as I do not see them in the manual. Can any one shed some light on this ? I don't want to touch the Allen heads until I know what to do and not make the situation worse. Thanks as always for your advice and comments . Tracker

  I don't know of any way to adjust the window up position. If a window does not come up all of the way, look for binds in the regulator or worn felt in the side channels, causing a bind. Also look for slop in the cylinder and regulator mounting bolts.

The door windows should come up so that the top of the window is even with the top of the front vent window and the quarter windows should come up far enough so that the vertical side meets with the door glass. You may have to adjust the top after you fix the window problem.

Do you still have brake fluid in the system? If so have you flushed it recently? It should be flushed once a year, preferably in the fall. You could have a buildup of crud at the top of the cylinders keeping the windows from coming all of the way up.

If your system has been converted to a hydraulic oil, were all of the window cylinders rebuilt? It is necessary to rebuild the window, set and top cylinders when converting to hydraulic oil. The interaction of brake fluid with hydraulic oil will cause the cylinders to become very sluggish.

Can you post some photos of the car with the top down and the windows up?

  Thanks for your reply. My computer went down and I had to replace it so apologize for the delay in getting back to you. When car was re-built, put in all new door cylinders and converted fluid from brake to trans fluid and had the top motor assy re built by Hydro Electric. Widows go up and down with no issues other than they do not come up to the same heights ...there is as much as 1" difference on the doors versus the rear windows.

I will take & attach pictures to illustrate the problem. I have checked for binds and there are none. Do you know what the the three allen head large screws in the door pillars are for ...I think this may be for adjustment but dont want to make the problem worse until I know for certain.   Tracker, None of my reference material shows adjustment screws for up or down limits. The limits are determined by the cylinder ram travel.

Please take photos of where the Allen screws are located. Please take a photo showing the door window and vent window junction as well as the door window and quarter window junction, the take one that shows the complete side of the car.

Has this problem existed since the new cylinders were installed or is it a new problem?

  Are you talking about the up position of the rear 1/4 windows? My 48 Mercury has a set screw about 1 inch from the top of the door pillar that can be moved in and out with a small flat blade screwdriver. This set screw establishes the up stop for the 1/4 window. You 1951 Mercury may be similar as an adjustment. Bill Large

  Tracker, you did not answer my questions about when this problem occurred. Your photos show a very nice 51 Mercury.

To find out the cause of your window problem, I would disconnect the window from the hydraulic regulator and raise it to the upper limit of travel. The top of the window should be at the to of the vent window frame. If it is, you have a problem with the hydraulic regulator.

Is it possible that you have closed car regulators? I don't have a Body Parts Catalog, so I don't know if they are different. I also don't know if the closed car regulators would bolt into the convertible doors.

Thanks for your comments on the car. I followed your suggestions and found what I was beginning to believe that the replacement cylinders in both door windows were losing prime. Took the doors apart and found that both rams were coming to the top but would then back off and the windows would fall back to uneven heights. Called my supplier and they agreed to send me a different brand made in the USA. When this issue is resolved, I will report back. As always you have been very helpful in dealing with this car. Its a good thing but I now know the full meaning of old cars are not for everyone. Took me 3 years to build it from the ground up and now I feel sometimes I am doing it all over again. I dont drive it as much as it should be and mabey the problem is me.

  Thanks for your inputs ...the allen heads were a mystery aggravation. The manual illustrations do not even show these adjustments. My first problem was the front driver -passenger side windows would not maintain an even profile with the rear windows at full height. When the top was up, there were large cracks/openings between the top and the windows and looked like holy cr*p. When the car was re-built all the hydraulic cylinders in the car including the power seat were replaced. By trial and error and a lot of help from the knowledgeable guys on this forum, I finally suspected and confirmed that the cylinders were losing prime when fully extended and the window rams were falling back down as much as an inch. Now replacing all door cylinders with replacement made in USA name brand products.
