All- I have a '53 Mercury Custom two door sedan with a pronounced whine in the rear axle; I presume, as the car approaches 100k miles, the ring and pinion gears are worn and in need of replacement. Once I remove them, can anyone recommend a source for replacement gears? Also, what other applications use the same setup? Are available gears only for Ford or do they apply to Mercury as well? I have the 255 V8 with 3 sp/OD. Many thanks for any advice you can provide-

I think before you start looking at gears, put the car up on jackstands, block the front wheels, start the car and put it in gear, then crawl under and with a long screwdriver held to your ear, ck the rear wheel hubs/bearings and the center section for noise. Be careful. FWIW Paul in CT

1953 Mercury is the whine there all the time ? or just backing off on the gas, I would check the gear grease for metal chips ,particles. etc drain the gear grease and run magnet though the oil and see what it picks up and how old is the gear oil ? maybe a change of gear oil might quiet it down ? there are additives that might help. it also may be rear axle bearing, and for ho ho's check front wheel bearing's my 2 cents 37Ragtopman This message was edited by 37RAGTOPMAN on 11-6-20 @ 2:16 PM

Thank you for the thoughts - we've already confirmed gears are needed. Yes, whines under load (when gas is pressed). I should have added it's the stock 4:10 rear end, which I like. Will replace all seals and bearings while we're at it.

From the 1953 Mercury Chassis Parts Catalog 8A-144208-D Kit diff. gear & driving pinion-14.lO to 1 ratio consists of the following 1 Sd-4209-J Gear & Pinion 1 814-4662-B Spacer 10 8A-4663 Shims The P/N is the same P/N used for the Ford 4.10:1 gear set used with the OD transmission. Tom

I have a rear end, 4:11 (over drive), set up for the 1949-51 sedans. It is N. O. S. ring and pinion, spider gears etc. I'd like to sell it all. If it is the same as your car, and you're interested; PM me Regards, Steve Lee

I have a NOS 1950 Ford car overdrive!4:11 ring, pinion, and spider gears etc. for sale. It should be the same as Merc; but I don't know? Also, why would Merc use 4:10, and Ford use 4:11, for overdrive? Henry watched costs of MFG. like a hawk, so why would he do that??That's only a( 1) motor revolution difference; That makes no sense at all!! Regards, Steve Lee

The 1953 Mercury uses the same type of rear axle housing as the Ford F-100, Ford Courier and Station Wagon models. The Ford Passenger Cars used a different type of rear axle which featured a removable carrier assembly (differential). Available axle ratios for the Ford passenger vehicles were 3.15, 3.31, 3.90 & 4.10. For the Sedan Delivery and the Wagons, the available ratios were 3.54, 4.09 and 4.27. This information came from the 1952-1953 Ford Book.

The 52-53 Mercury 4:10 overdrive rear axle part # AC-4006-B has the drop out section (pumpkin). Per Mercury Chassis Parts Catalogue. Check ring and pinion gear mesh with Prussian Blue or white lead for correct contact pattern, adjustment may be all that is required unless there is obvious physical damage.

I have parted 3 '53 Mercurys. If you are still in need, and would be interested in a used rear end, I can help. But not until May, too old, and too cold to dig anything out right now.
