  Mercury Maintenance manual calls for:

Engine: 20W above 32F, from 32F to -10F 10W, below -10F use 5W

Transmission: SAE 80 EP gear oil

Rear End: same oil as transmission.

I use 10W30 motor oil by a major oil company. I have been using Mobil 1 10W-30 full synthetic in my Lincoln and it has made a big improvement in performance of the engine. I haven't driven my Merc this year so it still has the dinosaur oil in it. I will probably change to Mobil 1 next year.

I am not concerned with adding ZDDP to the oil. The valve train in both cars do not exert extreme pressures on the cam shaft and my research has shown that the catastrophic failure of cam shaft occurred in the first 3,00 miles.

I use Pennzoil Synchromesh 80-90 Gear oil in the transmission

Do your research and make up your own mind as you are the one that has to be satisfied.

Everyone you ask this question of will give you different recommendations, here are mine:

Flathead V-8 Engine - Pennzoil SAE 30 Detergent Oil API Service SN with 8 oz. Red Line Engine Oil Break-In Additive (this contains the required amount of ZDDP to minimize cam and tappet wear - this is especially important if you have the dual stage fuel/vacuum pump)

Borg-Warner Overdrive Transmission - NAPA SAE 90W Mineral Gear Oil API GL-1 (this oil is compatible with the metals used in the overdrive unit)

Rear Axle - Pennzoil or Valvoline Gear Oil SAE 80W-90 API GL-5 (these oils are for hypoid gear trains)
