The best solution to make the car more highway friendly is to install a Columbia overdrive. They are expensive and difficult to find in good condition.

Before I get into gear changes, I would like to know your expectations, where you live and the current differential gear ratio.

Most Mercurys were delivered with a 3.54:1 rear end ratio. The original ratio is stamped on the rear end by the torque tube mounting . The 3.54 would be stamped 11-39 and the 3.78 would be stamped 9-34. You should be able to cruise at 50-55 comfortably with either ratio. You will hear the engine running like it is working at these speeds, unlike modern cars that can cruise at 70 mph without hearing the engine.

The 3.78 is a good ratio in foothills and mild grade areas, the 3.54 is a good ratio in flat areas and the 4.11 is OK in mountain areas.

So what if I went another route. What framework are you merc guys putting under these pick-ups , so you can get a nice ride. and high way friendly, I know chev trucks all use a s-10 frame work,

I did not know that you were discussing a pickup. You did not specify that in your post. I am not a truck guy, so I cannot tell you how to make the truck more highway friendly.

I suggest that you determine the current differential ratio and the transmission in the truck and then post your query in the Truck section of this Forum. People who have more truck knowledge than I have, read that Forum and answer questions there.

If you are uncomfortable with the ride qualities, you should ask your questions there also.

If you intend to modify your truck by mounting the body on a different chassis, you probably will not get the best answers here, as most of the visitors are interested in restoring their vehicles to factory specification, with any modifications not readily observed. The HAMB is a Bulletin Board where people interested in modifications hang out. You could get some good answers on a chassis swap there.

I think that the Mercury pickups look cool. They are more dressed up than the Ford pickups and I hope that you can keep it stock.
