In about 10 days I will be installing a late model flathead motor which the seller indicated was a Mercury. Head indicates that it is a 52 year. Block is embossed on the rear with a "P" at the top and to the right is L-891. Does this indicate a Mercury or Ford block? Any help would be appreciated. Arnie

I don't know of any block markings that define a post WWII Mercury block from a Ford block. As far as I know the blocks were identical and the differences were the crank shaft and other external accessories. Tom
