Topic: 1949 Mercury Overdrive / Speedometer

I have some oil seepage into the speedometer cable - coming from the transmission. Original overdrive transmission with fluid to the bottom of plug. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if I should take a bit of oil out of the 'rear' of the transmission. OR should there be a 'O-Ring' on the I.D of the speedometer cable at the gear? Any help??

The type 2 speedometer cable uses a seal and the type 1 does not. The type 2 cable has a recess machined in the end that goes to the transmission. Check your parts catalog for drawings of the two types. Both types were used in 1949.

Mac Vanpelt may have better information, give him a call.
