Topic: Engine issues

I thought I had the Engine sorted out in my 39 Mercury Town sedan. After I thought I resolved the Fuel Pump issue now another problem seems to have re-appeared. When I took it for a short drive, after the Engine is warm, it seems to have a a loss of power. Then it suddenly dies. After a couple of minutes, it starts again and runs, but not well. I started it 4 times to get it home from a 7 mile trip. I have recently replaced the distributor, rotors, condenser, mechanical fuel pump, and wiring harness. It has acted like this before and I changed the distributor, condensor and rotors twice. It runs ok for a short time. The longest I have driven it lately is under 20 miles. I am afraid to take it very far. Bad condenser again? Coil, rotors, fuel issue, stuck valve? Where to begin? Rebuild the Engine! I want to be able to drive it without stressing out about it leaving me walking home. Thanks -- Steve

Make sure the gas cap is vented [try driving it with the cap off] and the fuel line is not plugged and the flex line to the fuel pump is not sucking air

It could be that your coil is going bad.

Your description could indicate a bad coil or a plugged fuel line.

You do not need to drive it to diagnose the problem. Start the car and check the spark at idle by holding a plug wire close to a head nut with an insulated screwdriver or pliers. The spark should be blue or white in color and about 1/2" long. If it is orange or yellow, your coil or condenser is probably bad. Send both of them to Skip Haney in FL.

If the spark is good, wait until the engine is warm and repeat the test. If the spark is still good, perform the fuel delivery test as I posted in this topic:

As we all know, a fuel problem will often mimic an ignition problem, and vice versa.

I had exactly the same problems with my 1951 CV....turned out the problem ( first time ) was a bad power valve in the 885 Holley carb. The second time , it turned out to be a Chinese made coil I purchased from Amazon.

The coil is an easier diagnosis ...the carb was a remanufactured carb I purchased on line from a seller on E-Bay. Looked great but did not work at speed...idled great but power valve center stem was broken off internally. Inspection indicated some one had used pliers and a screw driver in an attempt to remove it an demolished it.
