Topic: 1951 Hood Alignment

Tracker    -- 06-28-2017 @ 9:07 AM
Can anyone tell me the proper way to align the hood...the fender /fit on the drivers side is credit card thin but the passenger side has about a 1/8 inch gap widening out at the front of the car. I do not see any adjustment at the bolts of the hood supports. Car has never been hit but repainted once ...the gap seems to have appeared over the last 500 miles or so.

Thanks for your suggestions

Tracker, the most common cause of changes in the hood adjustment is worn hinges. These cars are well known for elongating the hinge pivots.

I have attached the shop manual pages with the gaps and adjustment procedure. Sorry that the adjustment page is upside down, but that is the only way i could scan it.

Thanks Tom...at least now I know what to look for....replacement hood hinges I expect will be hard to locate but that's where I will start. Will give a playback when this project is finished.

  Tom

I was able to secure a NOS set of hood hinges ! Definitely not a job for one person..my hood is undercoated from the factory and weighs a ton...need two ( 3 would be better I think) to make this alignment and its not an easy task...next time I would use a pro body shop. The adjustment is all in the part that attaches to the firewall and the elongated holes offer little tolerances but in all it worked. Looks 100 % better but man what a job.

The hinge that was causing the problem ( drivers side ) had severely elongated the forward adjustment. Next , the hood dowel pin was off as well ...not to tough to fix this but caution its fully catching before driving. As, always Tom . thanks for your advice in working me through this latest adventure.

Glad that you were able to find new hinges. Make sure that you keep them lubricated, so that they do not wear the pivot points again.

You are right about it not being a 2 man job.
