Topic: 1949 Mercury Overdrive Problems

The transmission in my 49 Mercury makes a tinny clinking sound in all gears mostly after shifting and accelerating. It still shifts great but there has to be something wrong! Any help would be appreciated. I did replace both u-joints. Also the overdrive is not complete.

What do you mean by "the overdrive is not complete"?

It is not equipped with its electrical accessories but does have the solenoid.

I hate to say it, but it looks like your best bet is to remove the transmission and overdrive and look inside for worn parts. Pay special attention to the bearings and synchronizers.

The 1949 - 1051 Lincoln Mercury Overhaul manual will help you with the procedures to check the transmission. If you live near Batavia, OH., Mac VanPelt is a reliable transmission rebuilder.

Thanks for your expertise, Tom. I guess that is what I will have to do!

Hi Tom, I was just wondering if the 1949 and 1950 Mercury overdrive transmissions are interchangeable. Thanks for your time. Dale

Maybe a weak or broken spring, or a broken bolt in the Bendix unit on your starter.
The tinny clinking sound may be the starter gear bouncing on the teeth of the flywheel. I would check that out before pulling the transmission.

Dale, I do not have the interchange information for the 1949 - 1951 Mercury. You can try asking Gene Napoliello by postng your question in the 1949-1951 Forum and sending him a PM, or look up his contact information in the V-8 Times.

Same transmission (49-50) and in 1951 they used the same transmission as the Fords I.E. the bell housing was the pressed steel design with the regular model transmision as used by the Ford sedans not the Cast Iron SAE circular style bell housing with a matching flange style transmission. Some say the late 1950 Mercury used the 1951 style but my 50 is a very late model. Most parts are interchangeable from the Ford transmision but particular attention must be paid to the overdrive output shaft (the shaft with the large drum that supports the OD ring gear) as 1951 Ford and Mercury have a different part number and lenght for this part.
