Topic: 1936 Phaeton Convertible

  Ladies and gents:
I have just bought a 1936 Phaeton Convertible......I need some basic information>
Where is the fuse box?
What should the oil pressure read at idle? At 45mph in 3rd gear?
Where can I find an owners manual on line?
Best,
Tony

Tbones, Congratulations! Your Phaeton is beautiful! An EFV8CA Dearborn winner (the badge on your licence plate frame).

Your light circuits (only) are protected by a single fuse, located up high on the firewall above the steering column. It is on a fiber board together with an ignition resistor. Don't touch the resistor while the engine is running, or you'll have a scar for life like me.

Your oil pressure is good if the needle moves while at slow idle, and at anywhere above 20 lbs at cruising speed. Multiply by 2 if the engine is cold.

An owners manual is just the start. You'll want a repop to read, and an original for the glove box if you wish to have your car point judged. The first is cheap, available at antique Ford parts dealers everywhere: http://www.earlyfordv8.org/early-ford-links.cfm?id=3

The second can be costly depending on condition and if it has an envelope. You'll find it in ads placed on this website: http://www.earlyfordv8.org/early-ford-classifieds.cfm

Also in the club's magazine "The V8 Times", which comes with membership in the EFV8CA:

And at swap meets.

By the way, your post is lost in the Lincoln Forum, and an open Ford car can be a Phaeton or a convertible, but not both. A convertible has roll up windows and a one piece cowl/windshield frame. Yours has chrome windshield posts, and snap on soft windows, a very stylish car, however spartan.

Seeing the licence plate on your car, I suppose you are located in Oregon. Check the National Meet schedule and register for the Redmond, Oregon meet. This is what owning an Early Ford is all about!

Many thanks Alan for the great information. I have always been a Jag owner so this is a new adventure for us and we obviously need a lot of guidance.
Found the fuse box, and yes we have blown the fuse.....
Thanks for re-assuring me on the oil pressure we range from 10 to 50psi.
yes, I hit the wrong section, and I have now re-posted.
While the car came from Oregon, it now resides in Prescott, AZ.
Where are you located, and what do you own?
Tony

Tony, I'm playing catch-up here, I guess i wasn't online yeaterday and missed your post.

I'm in the SF Bay Area. If you decide to go to Redmond in September, you'd better do it quick or the Motels will be full up. You'll have to register for the meet first to get the group rate at the motels.

You're about halfway between the Western and the Central National Meets, doing both those meets would break in your car for sure!

The fuse will be a 20 amp, I believe, and is the only one you'll find that will fit. Don't worry about the label if it says 12 Volt, it'll work. The real question is why the fuse blew. If it blows again, you'd better trace it down. It is the light circuit only, so that narrows it down some for you.

As Dan told you in your other post, my car is a '38 Convertible Coupe. Next to the last rumbleseat Fords.

You'll want the wrench someone told you about. It's just an open end, but nice to have. Did you not get the set of Ford tools with rthe car? They are really just for show, anyway. The best tool to have in your car at all times is the V8 Club Roster. Break down in the boonies and help is but a phone call away if you have the Roster.

If you do your own wrenching, you'll want a MoToRs Manual from the era, out of print, but not too costly, and a Ford Service Bulletins 1938-40. This is being reprinted, and is also reasonable in cost. Get this edition, as it contains the revisions you'll need.
