Topic: Driveline Lincoln rear to Ford 3 speed toploader

Just assembled my '39 Ford coupe on 112" '40 chassis with '41 Lincoln Zephyr rear axle and torque tube. the u-joint housing comes up about an inch or 2 short of the rear tranny mount. Driveshaft engages u-joint but not sure if fully. What is the solution? Thanks.

Does the rear spring on a Lincoln attach to the axle housing in the same relative position as the Ford? Is the difference due to the Lincoln rearend being a Hypoid design thus lowering the rear of the drive shaft? The Lincoln shaft has to be a tad longer to reach as far forward as the Ford shaft. Is there any reason why you used the Lincoln? It's probably geared deep into the "4"s and there are no better gear sets for them.

Thanks Dale. Rear spring mount is essentially the same. The lower position of the drive shaft explains the "shortcoming" . The car is a recreation of a specific 1/4 mile dirt track mid-fifties era hardtop. I will use it in a vintage racing program here in northern Calif. Brute strength and low gears is what I wanted

Drive shafts were different lengths for overdrive transmissions and standard 3 speed transmissions. Apparently you need the longer standard trans drive shaft and then shorten it to suit your needs.

Hardtop 25: I'm glad Pickup brought this tread back, as I'm an old fan of these cars (or just about any roundy-round dirt track cars).

Give us an update,if you can. I'd love to hear how this project is progressing.
