  I need to find a good knowledgeable mechanic to do a valve job and tune-up on my 1939 Lincoln Zephyr V-12. I live in southern Virginia near Hillsville and Galax, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

  Your best bet is to look at the Regional Group Directory and find the one nearest to you in VA or NC and contact them for a reference.

Keep in mind that while the Zephyr engine is similar to the V-8, there are enough differences that you should be careful in selecting the mechanic.

I would like to know why you think that you need a valve job on your car?

You can have the points replaced and adjusted by Skip Haney in FL

Send him your distributor and coil and he will check them out and replace or repair any worn or defective parts.

  I haven't done a compression check yet, but the car is really down on power. I will do the compression check shortly and post the results.

  If the compression is fairly equal on all cylinders, but low, The rings could be stuck in their lands. In that case try adding about a pint of Marvel Mystery oil to the crankcase. It's good for the motor and will possibly free them up (and every thing else that is stuck from sitting) after driving it a while. At the very least, it is good if your car sits for any length of time, and won't do any harm. I put a little in my Lycoming aircraft motor, and when it sits, I prop turn the motor over several times to keep everything lubed

  I had my Old Ford Radio fixed at Highly Recommended though.

  My father fixed my 1948 Ford Philco radio with station selector by removing the vibrator and peeling it open at the bottom and taking out the dual points and using an ignition file on them. It worked for the next 20 years as he also disconnected the solenoids for the station selector which apparently had a short. Not tubes were even replaced.

  Harold "Putt" Smith in Collegeville Georgia is the best there is. (Collegeville is a little SW of Atlanta.) He did his first motor rebuild for his neighbor across the street at age 12!!! And it ran!!! He is the "Flat Head Guru." Call him, 770-757-8945, 797-964-6973. He'll do the valve job and anything else you need done.
