I am rebuilding a 1940 Mercury V8 and need to have the fuel pump and carb restored. I can do the rebuild but not the plating of the castings and hardware. Any recommendations on who does excellent, accurate restorations of these components? Does the vacuum line for the distributor run to the intake manifold or carb? Is the line plain copper finish or painted black or green? Does it have brass flaired fittings on each end or a banjo fitting one one end, fair on the other? Would any one have a picture of the line? The vacuum line for the distributor runs from a tapped hole in the intake directly to the distributor. The line is plain, NO paint. The fittings on each end are brass and measure 1/2" across flats. Dennis Carpenter ( http://www.dennis-carpenter.com/) sells a reproduction of the line (P/N 40-12226B), but I am not sure if it has the special fittings correct for a 1940 car. Roy Nacewicz ((734) 654-9450 ) does have the correct fittings, and may have the line also, I do not have his catalog. Tom

Eastwood has some special paints that mimic the color of castings, etc. (eastwood,com). I don't know if they are fuel-proof, so ask.

They (Eastwood's coatings) are pretty darn good. I have used them on occasion with very good results. I only 'mist' the carburetor vs. a full coating.

Caswell sells plating kits that simulate the cadmium plating on a lot of the under hood parts. Eastwood sells a zinc plating kit for less money. I haven't tried the Caswell kit but have had good results with the Eastwood kit. The key is having the parts clean as the plating will not stick to any place that has oil or gasoline contamination and will not cover rust. Caswell site is: http://www.caswellplating.com/kits/ If you go with the Eastwood paint, do as Kube says and just mist the parts with the color and then clear coat the part with the satin clear coat sold by Eastwood. Do not try to mix other vendors paints with Eastwood's as they may not be compatible. Top coating an Eastwood covered part with another vendor's paint may cause wrinkling and peeling. Tom
