I HAVE A TOP HAT OIL BATH CLEANER FOR MY '40. THERE ARE TWO DECALS AVAILABLE: DF65 IS A BLUE/WHITE OVAL DECAL AND DF4 IS A YELLOW/BLACK RECTANGLE DECAL. HOW CAN I TELL WHICH IS CORRECT FOR MY CAR?

If your air filter is the same as the one shown in the picture below, then the blue and white oval is the correct decal (mine was still in place 40 years ago when I got this filter - it got looking so bad that I replaced it on the last refresh). My understanding is that the proper position is on the driver's side above the dip stick. The yellow and black decal is for the larger heavy duty filter that bolts to the head.

To be more precise, there were actually two distinct 'top hat' type oil bath cleaners. One was made by United and the other by Donaldson. Both companies were authorized suppliers to Ford Motor CO.
The Donaldson type had a 'D' within a triangle on the very bottom of the filter housing. It (Donaldson) also had a more 'domed' top with six indented ribs leading outwardly from the center. The United type on the other hand had a cover that simply had a couple of concentric 'rings'.
Once you've determined which filter you have for certain here are the decal requirements:
Donaldson gets the oval (predominately) blue decal.
United Gets the rectangular (predominately) yellow decal.
The decal was located on the left side of either filter.
Hope this helps.
