This question will reveal my ignorance; but did Ford build a 4-door convertible in 1940?
I know that Mercury did, but I've never seen a 40. Friend of mine is working on
one out West, and I'm thinking it is actually a 39 with 40 deluxe sheet metal and cowl added. It is titled as a 39, but has a 40 dash, steering wheel, column shift etc.

Ford did not make a covertible sedan in 1940. Out here on the "left" coast I have seen a couple of '39 convertible sedans converted with the 40 front sheetmetal. Since all '39 convertible sedans were deluxe, I don't think it is too difficult to make the conversion. You should not have to change the cowl or the firewall.

Dan, Tom is correct. Back in the day, it was very common to upgrade a collision repair to the newer model if they shared the basic body. This is why you might see a '40 Ford Convertible Coupe. Going the other way, an apparent '50 Ford Victoria inspires some interesting conversations also!

Thanks guys! I thought I was right, but didn't want to rain on Left Coast buddies parade
without hearing from "The Authorities". I know the "Green Bible" only shows the 116" WB
4-door "vert" body, which of course would be a Merc.

OK, guys. Here is a real head scratcher. This Edsel came into our shop last year. The owner swears it is "real", but we haven't seen any retractibles in the limited Edsel info we have seen.

A fascination and fantasy of mine. I had a 40 Merc Convertible Sedan for about eight years in high school and college. I always lusted after a 40 Ford Convertible sedan though.

Nice phony, Henry. You could use some Photoshop lessons though.
