Topic: Motor mount bolt torque

Is it possible to tighten the motor mount nuts too much? I replaced my motor mounts with Dennis Carpenter units to hopefully reduce a drone/vibration under load. My '40 Tudor acted like the engine was "grounding" to the frame due to excessive mount compression when going up hills. I noticed that the transmission mounts had a longer shoulder on the bolts than the reproduction bolts so I reused the original bolts for the transmission. The front mount bolts were the same length as the originals so I used the new bolts on the front mounts. Assuming that the length of the shoulder on the mount bolt determines the amount of compression of the rubber insulators, I tightened the nuts until they stopped and put the cotter pins in. Looking at the lower insulators, it seems as though they have a pretty big bulge and my drone/vibration is worse than it was before. Can I loosen the nuts or is there something else I'm missing? Thank you, Gil

Gil, Tighten the nuts just enough to insert the cotter pin.

Thank you for the information. I will back the nuts off a few turns until the cotter pins just fit.

Gil, Be certain to place the large diameter flat washer between the top of the rubber and the bottom (foot) of the pump.

Mike - installing a new set of Drake front mounts. The large, black washer is between the top of the rubber and the bottom (foot) of the pumps. The new Drake mounts did not come with washers to place under the castle nuts on top of the pump feet. The holes in these water pump feet vary in diameter/ID. What is your recommendation for these? Asking as the two removed were clearly not per spec, likely changed years ago and they differed in finish and thickness. The passenger side washer was thinner than the driver's side and was somewhat concave'd from being tightened too much against the shoulder bolt (incorrect bolt - lot of personal history with this on this forum) and collapsing into a the slightly large opening of the passenger side water pump foot.

Greatly appreciate your recommendation. Thanks - Steve

Steve, I'd just installed a pair of Drake mounts last weekend. The large washer was integral of the mount. I did (no surprise) have to use mu old bolts as the new bolts were a tad too short.
I'd heard numerous times that to be an issue.

C&G lists a longer bolt, B-6047-B, but they are currently out of stock.

Steve, I am so sorry as I never did answer your question properly. I'll blame it on a senior moment. My apology to you sir.
As a matter of fact, I have NOS washers, the washers you actually asked about, and measured them. They are (all five pieces) .119" - .120".
The inside diameter is .445" on all of them. The outside diameter is a nominal 1.000"
