Would like to experience the ride of radials on my '40 sedan on the cheap. Minimum 4 ply passenger radials widths seem to start at 205 , eight inches wide. Can those 4" rims handle that width safely? A 205, 70 R16 tire would lower the car about a half inch. Carl

Radial tires are definitely the way to go for the best ride and handling. Unfortunately there are no cheap 16" radial tires.

You can use 15" modern tubeless radial tires in the 205/75 R 15 size which will work on a 5" wide wheel. These tires are available from Tire Rack and other vendors for about $105 per tire if you can be happy with black sidewall tires.

You will have to source some 5" wide 15" diameter wheels with the correct 1940 Ford 5 on 5 1/2" bolt pattern. Wheels of these dimensions were used on late 40's & early 50's Mercury's and some Ford pickups and vans from the 50's and early 60's.

The 205/75 R 15 tire has an overall diameter of about 27.1" which is close to the diameter of your original 6.00 x 16" tires. These modern tires are much more reliable and less expensive than "show car" tires.
