So my wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I currently have 15 x5.5 wheels with 10 year old P250/75R15s black walls on them. I was going to order some Cali tires or some Coker american classics, but then I thought, should I go get some 16in wheels and make this more authentic. But now that I've searched, does anybody make the 16x4 wheels from the 1940 cars? I dont even see 16s on Coker's site and speedway has 4.5" but not 4 but at over 200 a wheel. Then I thought I'd get some originals but then I've read even if you can find them, often they have issues. What are your thoughts, just stick with the 15s? And if so, what size would you recommend? Coker says 670R15. thx

If you are running stock lever action shocks the 15X5 1/5 can cause problems by allowing the tires to come in contact with the shock arms. I speak from experience on this one. You might give a company called Wheelsmith about making up some 16 by 4s or 5s. The original 16X4s are out there and you need to find some where the wheels rims are not rusty and the lug holes not worn.

What do you want to do with this car? If you want it to be points judged in Early Ford V-8 Club events, you most likely want to have the stock 1940 size 16" x 4" wide wheels to avoid being gigged for having the wrong size. This presents problems in finding good, reliable and affordable new tires. Since my Fords are drivers, only shown in the Touring Classes, I run modern 15" tubeless radial tires. You might consider trying to find 15" x 5" wide wheels with the correct 5x5 1/2" bolt circle for your car. Stock wheels with this bolt pattern were used on full-size Ford pickups and vans from 1949 until at least 1986. You will then be able to use readily available and affordable 15" tires. If you don't require white walls, you can use Goodyear or other major brand tires in the 205/75R15 size. I don't know if they are still available but in 2015 I went with Goodyear Assurance All-Season tires. These gave excellent service in everyday driving and highway use. Never had any flats or problems with them in over 15K miles of use. The same cannot be said for some "show car" radial tube type tires previously used.

Lucas Tire in Long Beach, CA has the tires. I purchased five 600-16 Goodyear (probably made by Coker) belted bias ply tires and tubes a little over a month ago. I imagine you can find stock wheels if you search the usual antique Ford Parts places (I would try the Early Ford Store in San Dimas, Ca).

Well I've had this setup since I bought the car 2 years ago and haven't noticed anything, would it be obvious if they were hitting the arms? Maybe I am wong and they are 5 inch or maybe the shocks are not stock. I have P205/75R15 goodyears on there now, they are fine, just old. I wanted to get a white wall which is why I considered cali tires, they just vulcanize a white wall onto a standard radial size of your choice. This is a driver and I want it to look in the ballpark but doesn't need to be authemtic. ford wheels from 1940 have distinct right angles on the rim part, if you are not a stickler for authenticity then you can use a rim all the way up to 1948, also F1 trucks had 16" wheels until 53? in the area around me 16 " wheels are around and can be found for $75 each if you follow facebook/craigslist
