Topic: Column shift will not go into 2nd or 3rd.

My 41 Super Deluxe Coupe shifter will not go into 2nd or 3rd gear. Any diagrams or info out there? Have the steering wheel off and don't see anything broken. Tranny has been re built. Was working fine then it went wonky. Upper tube is moving a little left and right. I fabricated a plate to limit the movement, no help.

Thanks alot!

One cause of this problem is that the levers at the base of the steering column are out of alignment. This usually occurs due to wear of the gearshift lever grommets and other parts in the shifting system. You might find that the grommets have gotten so worn that they are no longer keeping the shifter rods aligned within the levers. You can obtain a Gear Shift Lever Grommet Kit from C&G and other vendors. C&G shows that they have the kit in stock under part number 01A-7354-RK for $19.95. Installation of this kit is fairly straightforward.

To get the car drivable, you may be able to manually move a lever at base of steering column back into position so it aligns with the other lever.

When I was a teen, one of my friends had a Chevy with loose shift levers. Every couple days one of us would have to jump out and play with the levers at base of steering column while he slowly moved the shift stick. Once aligned, was good for another couple days.

Using the diagram as posted above part no 7337 is a solid steel pin. when in neutral position both of the recesses in parts 7202 and 7303 have to align with the pin so the shift lever can be raised to go into 2-3 or without moving from neutral into R-1. It is possible you need an adjustment of the rods 7326 or 7328 to make everything in the neutral position align. Yes worn rubber joints on both ends of the adjustment rods could also be a problem. The rubber joints have to be in good condition, they can be purchased new and installed before adjusting.
