Topic: update on fuel issue

  Hello,
This post is only a follow-up on a previous post from about a week ago when I was whining about my 40 V-8 leaking gas from the carburetor's base and running very much too rich. Thank you for the suggestions. I decided not to send carb and fuel pump to Charlie for rebuilding only due to my serious distrust of shipping, especially via the USPS. I installed a 'T' in the fuel line between the pump and carb. While idling, 5 psi was being produced. The max spec is 3.0 or 3.5 psi, depending on which manual is consulted. My pump was producing 5.25 psi., apparently enough to lift the needle off the seat and allow too much fuel to enter the carb. I disassembled the pump and removed the pressure spring. Nosing through my 'stuff', I found a horn button spring with essentially the same dimensions, except for the wire diameter. The original pump wire dia: .080. Horn button springs wire dia: .070. It felt slightly weaker, so I installed it. Pressure is now 2.5 psi at idle. No more leaks and it runs great. Just thought I'd let y'all know in case you have a similar issue.

Barney, You apparently have one of the newer pumps that were made with those strong springs. The older pumps didn't have that issue. Good find with the horn spring! I did basically the same kind of swap years ago using a sewing machine spring for the ejector in a semi-automatic!
