Since there is plenty of 16 inch radial tires out there today,I was just wondering what would be the best and biggest size tire(radial) for a stock 40 wheel with out causing any problems?I am looking for just black walls.My Cokers are aging and time to change!Looking to keep same size on front and rear.I figure you don't have to pay over $200 a tire to get just a decent tire for a driver car without buying a reproduction tire? You will need to go to a good tire shop and have them match the size of your existing tires to a modern radial. They can measure the height and also they need to know the rim width which is most probably 4" wide. Also check the Diamondback tire website. I think they use the modern radial sizes on some of their radial tires.

Looks like a 600X16 bias ply converts to a 195/80R16 in a metric size tire of today.Would that be probably be the largest and safest tire size to run on a stock 4 inch wide 40 wheel?

If you're using stock '40 wheels, you will need inner tubes. Modern tubeless tires will not hold air using the stock wheels, al least not for long!
