  Continuing to get my 40 coupe back to original condition. Need input on how to replace the cigar lighter. Not sure how to get the receptacle out. Looks like it is pulled out VS pushed out the back. Also the radio would need to come out if I need to get to back of dash. Anyone have experience on this project

  It is my understanding that a ‘40 with a radio will require a unique short body cigar lighter receptacle which is quite pricy if you’re lucky enough to find one. I would suggest that if you have one installed already that doesn’t work, hang onto it for aesthetics.

Thanks for the input My question is how to connect the existing wire to the existing unit on the dash. I have a wire that is obviously for the lighter, but not connected. Do I need to remove the radio to connect the wire to the lighter?

I checked Ebay. They show a complete lighter assembly, including a "worn', correct maroon plastic knob. Seller guarantees that it works. EBay # is 124183816467.
What the ad DOESN'T say, as Alan correctly points out, is whether it has a short body, to work with the radio install. You'd have to check with the seller on that.
There is also a new cigar lighter maroon knob on sale - "Last One" is what the seller lists - whatever that means. Part # is 01A-15053A.
Cigar knob sells for $5.90. Complete unit is $59.00, not including shipping.
I found this stuff in the EBay website under "1940 Ford cigar lighter".
Check 'em out if you wish.
Pages 2-7 and 2-8 of "it's Ford for '40" explain that the receptacle was held in the dash "by three tangs".

  The radio has to be removed to remove the lighter well. The well has three spots with stamped fingers that extend slightly when the well is pushed into the hole in the dash. The three fingers have to be depressed slightly to get the well to come out the front of the dash.
As a suggestion do not connect the wire on the rear of the well so the lighter can function. If disconnected you can avoid problems. If your car is to be point judged there are ways to simulate the wire connection.

  The following was posted here by Kube back in 2016:

"In all of my experience I have had but two 1940 Fords start on fire. Both started at the lighter. My advice is to NOT connect the lighter. When restoring a '40, I place a "dead spot" within the wore so it appears as if all is "okay" when in reality no power can get to the receptacle.
