What is a good tire size to go to for a better ride and how much tire can you stuff inside the fenders on a 40? I want to use a 16” rim that will accept the hub caps and trim rings that were stock. Wide whitewalls are a must. Thanks.

6:50 x 16" was an authorized option. That's what I install to all of my restorations. They appear so much better than the smaller 600's.

Mike and I are on the same page with 6.50x16 tires. As far as ride improvement, new 6.00 or new 6.50 tires will probably improve the ride over any tire that is older than 7 years. As tires age, the rubber becomes harder and that causes ride and handling to become worse. The tires on my Mercury are approaching 7 years and while they have lots of tread left, I will probably replace them with new tires either next year or the year after.

I had 7.00x16 on a 40 Mercury many years ago and they did fit inside the fenders without rubbing. They are about 1.8" taller than the 6.00x16 tire and increased the speedometer error.

What are some of the best tire models to consider for a classic Ford car? I am currently checking the options on 4WheelOnline for a new set of tires.

I think that Coker tire has most of the antique car tire market sewed up. I have his Firestone tires on my Mercury and have been satisfied with their performance. They still look good after more than 6 years of driving on them and I have not had any problems with them.

The company was sold since I bought my tires, so look for comments on performance from the past 2 years. Any older comments would not reflect the current ownership.

On the HAMB many complaints off out of round Coker's and balance problems and of the W/Walls turning brown.

I have had good luck with Diamondback Classics.
