Topic: Battery in Trunk

I am doing a 1940 Ford coupe and I am putting the battery in the trunk. I was wondering what gauge of wire I should use? Thank you

Here is a link to a wire gauge calculation chart.

Use the Voltage Drop Critical column for the length and the amps for starter draw would be approximately 100 amps minimum for a 6 volt system.

Once you have it wired up, check the voltage drop of the cable by connecting your volt meter black lead on the battery post and the red lead on the cable at the solenoid. Crank the engine with the starter and the ignition off. The volt meter should read 0.1 or less. If it is more, you may have starting problems. Again this is for a 6V pos ground system.

  Thank you for that info.

The real next question you should ask is how will I attach the terminals to the wire?? Soldering is for low amperages and power needs bolted connections. In the trunk away from vibration I was able to use solder with a propane torch. Next is tying it down so it doesn't tip over and spill acid or worse short the hot terminal. Corrosion could be a problem in many years. Silver solder might be better. You are taking on a design exercise. Wire size? I used 00. common stuff at welding places. Not so common at auto parts stores.

The heaviest you can get; That's either 2awg, or 4awg; not sure of which one, but I think its'4(don't think they make 2awg)
