To prevent being locked out of my own car is it possible to modify the latch assembly at the end, right behind the crank handle, so that the door could not be locked with the inside handle? Would removing the spring at this point prevent the door from locking? Thanks for your response.

If your 39 is like my 40 Merc, if the inside handle is in the lock position and you close the door, the latch action moves the handle to the unlock position. You have to use a key to lock the door.

Leave your driver's door open and the place the passenger side door handle in the locked position and then close the door. If it locks, you probably have a latch assembly from a different manufacturer than the one Ford used. Look for a good used latch for your car.
