Topic: Brake adjusting cams

  Mike Kubarth,
Mike, is the adjusting cam a (4) part deal ? Anchor pin, cam, anchor pin plate, and locking nut? Maybe I'm "BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE" My so called anchor pin, has a very small cam on either side, and I thought that was the adjusting cam.

I was looking in Mac's catalogue, and they show a part: 39-42 cam, round OD with "D" shaped , passenger , commercial 122" wheel base,3/4 truck front and rear part #91A-2028-A

Now it's got me thinking that that part(#91A-2028-A) fits in the lower hole in each shoe under the anchor pin plate and that is the adjustment cam; not the small cams on the anchor pin;, the anchor pin just rotates it for adjustment. True???

That small cam on the end of the adjusting bolt is simply the thing you use to turn the bolt during the adjustment phase.
Make sense?
Beneath the plate you'd see the actual cam. It's a bronze special washer that when turned will rotate the shoe outward or inward as desired.

  \MIKE,

SO LIKE I THOUGHT .

THE ADJUSTMENT IS MADE WHEN THE ANCHOR PIN ON THE BACK OF THE BACKING PLATE IS MOVED, THEN IT MOVES THAT CAM WITH THE "D" SHAPED ID THAT THEN MOVES THE BOTTOM OF THE BRAKE SHOE IN OR OUT.

CORRECT?

  Mike,

Thanks again for your invaluable help! That's just what I thought, but needed verification!

I can do brakes on '49s and up, including discs, because when I was a mechanic in the 60's and 70's that was stock, but having never done this type, it's a learning process.
