My flathead (59ab?), distributor on front of the block. How do I set the timing? I have a mallory electronic ignition. Thanks for any help.

You will have to follow the instructions from Mallory. The Ford distributor is not as adjustable as the Mallory and it's timing is set by the opening of the points.

Tom, all cars with ignition points set the timing to the opening of the points. When the points "break" the spark occurs, and when that happens the mark on the pully should be aligned with the timing mark .I know you know that!! I used to do a "static" timing on VW 's with a simple test tight,( the one with a light bulb in it and the pointer on the end) and after connecting it to the "out" of the coil, and the "ice pick end" to ground, I'd put the pully in a position with the mark, just before the joint where the two halves of the crankcase meet, and bump the fan belt on the right side, center, to move the crank clockwise. The light came on when the points "broke," and I adjusted the distributor accordingly. They were all timed at that joint in the crank case. Most of the '49's up can still be timed that way. You would just need a breaker bar and socket on the crank pully bolt. It is extremely accurate!!It would be difficult with the old dual point distributors, because the points aren't as accessible.

  hi
you can try using a vacuum gauge, turn dist till you get the highest vacuum reading,
it should be pretty close., when installed.
then test drive, see what happens going up hills, if it has enough power,
and also set the carb at the same time,
my 2 cents 37Ragtopman
