I just bought a steering bushing for the top of the column, right under the steering wheel. it doesn't fit, sticks out way too far, wheel wont go on. my ride is a 1941 ford 1/2 pickup with a three speed column shift. It was a factory option in 41, it says so in the book on 40 41 ford trucks.

did you remove the old bushing? old bushing would keep it from going down all the way

Check for the old bushing still being in the column. It needs to be removed. I would also replace the bushing with a bearing. There is a retrofit bearing kit that will make a huge difference in your steering.

there does seem to be a cup of some kind in the top of the column. The bushing i bought fits snugly in side of this cup, but sticks out so far as to be unusable. can you tell me more about this bearing?

I go to the hardware store and buy a bearing for a 3/4 " shaft, usually a wheelbarrow bearing, clean the inside of the column, hone the inside of the bearing and push that down into the column jacket, It does sound like you have the remains of the later style cone bearing
