Who makes a correct size battery for '40 FORD? Any thoughts on OPTIMA batteries?

Here is a link to the correct size battery case with an optima inside.

http://antiqueautobattery.com/batteries/ford/2hf.html

I believe that the company has a new owner, but hasn't updated this website with his information.

I am on my third Optima in my 40 Mercury. The first one was installed in 1995, second in 2006 and the third in 2014. I originally installed one in my Ford script case because I was tired of cleaning and painting the battery tray and frame every year. The bonus was the extra years between replacements. I am in favor of everyone using the Optima, even though they have been blamed for poor reliability. If you let them completely discharge a few times, they may not come back.

  HI
I do not know what group your 40 takes, but O'REILLY'S has a group 2 for $107.99 675 CCA
they also have others,
you might have to order, takes day or so,
measure to make sure it fits , go on their web site to check it out,
hope this helps, 37RAGTOPMAN

DEKA, for about$ 89.00 with "about"675 or 750 CCA, whatever the spec was, (Actually with out looking it up, the same CCA as all of the others) with a 1 year warranty, and 3 year pro rated warranty. I think it's a group 2, And made in the USA, NOT MEXICO, like most all of the others!!! I just got one for my 1950 sedan, at a local shop that exclusively sells all kinds of batteries!

I'll second TomO's advice regarding Optima. They aren't cheap, but they are reliable, deliver 800 CCA, and don't outgas destructive acid fumes. A bonus if you enjoy doing your own work and have an old Ford Script battery, you can make your own battery box to hide the Optima, which will fool the Judges on the Concourse.

NAPA sells a BCI No. 1 Size 6V Battery which will fit in your car. The list price for this battery is $100.59. If you have a 10% discount due to being a veteran or using their code, and you trade in your old battery ($18 core charge) you will get out of the store for just under $100. The Battery Part number is 7244 and it provides 640 CCA and weighs 33 pounds.
