Topic: 47 Pickup 3 sp transmission

The 3 speed floor shifter on my 47 pickup is really sloppy. In order to not grind the gears I have to exaggerate my shifting. From 1st to 2nd I must push the shifter as far to the right as I can to avoid grinding. Same thing going into 3rd I must push to the right coming from 2nd. Does this issue sound like a linkage problem or is it internal?

It sounds like your shifter tower needs rebuilding. Mac Vanpelt wrote a very good book on rebuilding the transmission and he also provides this service.

take the stick out of the trans and look at the slot in the side-is it worn in a few spots? it should be 1/4" wide and the same all the way. be careful when pulling the stick there is a short pin on the right side that fits in the slot and this pin should show no wear-should be 1/4" in dia and about 1/2" long--worn slot--weld it up and grind for 1/4"--the pin can be replaced with a 1/4" drill bit shank
