Topic: 40 Ford gas cap lV

Here is another picture of the side edge of the 1932-thur 1935 gas cap. Ninty five percent of the so called original 1940 Ford gas caps that I have seen for sale have a flat outer ridge before dropping off to the knurneled side edge. Should the original 1940 gas cap have a flat outer edge or not? Were these original 1940 Ford, non-locking gas caps chromed steel, or were they flash chromed stainless steel? Domenic

The knurled edge on a proper '40 gas cap goes for nearly the entire length of the side. That is, there is no discernable "flat' spot.
The reproductions are terrible.

I am 99% certain these caps were stainless.

Mike, was the 1940 ford passenger car, non locking gas cap made of 304 stainless ? or could a magnet stick to the gas cap?Domenic

A magnet could stick to the cap even if it was stainless. The metal center piece was steel and the magnet would be attracted to that piece through the outer cap.

Tri ford thanks for your input to help solve what a standard 1940 ford gas cap should be. You would think that since practically every 1940 ford pass. car that left the factory had one , that a lot of them would have survived but it's been a tough part to try and buy, N.O.S. or used mint. Also their may have been more than one supplier, and with that some different variations. If you carefully hold the magnate to the outer side edge so the magnate will not be affected buy the under side steel center, than if it still sticks it's either non 304 stainless or if it dose not stick it's 304 stainless
