Topic: Cotter Pin placement

In 1940 was there a prescribed protocol for the placement of a cotter pin? In other words was the longer arm of the cotter pin bent over the end of the fastener and the shorter arm cut off or were both ends of the cotter pin bent around the threads of the fastener? Is it likely that the placement was left to the discretion of the individual suing the assembling. Thank you for any input regarding this matter!

I doubt there was a strict "policy" as to how a cotter pin was installed at the factory other than each "leg" was bent over opposite of one another.
As far as cutting a "leg" off... this was not done as they (Ford) used a specified length at every respective location.
If you feel the need to cut off a particular pin, then most likely you have the incorrect length.
The chassis parts manual specifies the proper pin for each application.
