It's a lot easier to install than you might think. And yes, it needs to be installed from the rear side. That brass strap is a common ground between two gauges. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

"Kubes," Working on my 1950 Fords behind the dash is "a piece of cake" compared to that tight space behind my forty's dash! I thought 1957 Corvette was tough to work on behind the dash, but this '40 looks just as bad. There is so much stuff back there it looks like 10 pounds in a 1 pound can!! How can you even get your hands in there? I will not enjoy putting in a new volt meter if that ends up to be the case! I wish Ford was smart enough to put screws in the front , so you could pull the instrument panel out from the front! Regards, Steve Lee

Put N.O.S. gauge in. Looking from the back of it,the power on the old one,and cardboard was to the L/ground strap! I put the cardboard under the R. side and put the N.O.S. gauge in w/ power to the R.side, and ground strap on L side. Rev'd the motor andgauge went into green area!!!Hurray!! Regards, Steve Lee
