Topic: CORRECT HARDWARE

KENNYB    -- 04-08-2010 @ 7:51 PM
I'M TRYING TO RESTORE MY '40 FORD AND I NEED TO KNOW THE CORRECT AND ACCURATE FINISH OF BOLTS AND NUTS IN THE VARIOUS AREAS OF THE CAR. I'VE SEEN MANY CARS AT SHOWS BUT NEVER FIND ANY DEFINITIVE PATTERN TO THE HARDWARE. THERE ARE SOME AREAS WHICH EVERYONE SEEMS TO AGREE BUT THERE ARE OTHER AREAS WHERE ANY AGREEMENT IS TOTALY MISSING. DOES ANYBODY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IS CORRECT AND ACCURATE HARDWARE EVERY PLACE ON A '40 FORD?

  Hi Ken,
I am not aware of any steadfast 'rule' as to what was plated cadmium or zinc or raven or simply left plain.
The fasteners as you know can be (and most often are) a crippling area for many restorers.
I can and will help you with this but unfortunately can't offer a 'one type' fits all scenario.
Also, to add to the confusion, the fasteners listed in the parts book are very often simply service parts and are NOT what was installed at the factory,.
I'm betting I didn't offer what you wanted to here but rather more frustration.
Sorry... just remember I am only the messenger

I'm sure there are variations with hardware. Ford was not going to shut down a line just because they ran out of a certain type fastner. I would not recomend using the fastner "kits" from many suppliers. You can get the same thing at Lowes for the most part. There is one supplier I trust for fastners. Roy Nacewicz in Carlton Michigan. While we all will agree that not every single vehicle left the factory the exact same way; I feel Roy to be the very best available.
