  3. Vulgar, Abusive, Racist and Sexist Language will not be tolerated.

  6. No Advertising of parts or cars; no Ebay or business/commercial ads (please use the "Classified" for ads Wanted or For Sale).
  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

    http://donclink.com/deuce_75_1/images/dscn2950.jpg

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)
  9. HOW DO I SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS ALONG WITH MY USERNAME? You can LogIn on the Forum, and select PREFERENCES. On this page Members can add optional information such as their City,State, Country; Occupation; Hobbies: list a Homepage; list AOL Instant Messanger Handle; Signature; "Make Email Address viewable to others;" and even change the number of Default Topics shown on a page. I am interested in acquiring a working period correct cig lighter for my 47 Ford Tonner Express pickup. I believe they were included in most if not all Mercury trucks and a rare option for Fords. I am looking for info on any differences between Mercury and Ford cig lighters, any photos, etc. to best educate myself on what was correct and available and then buying one if possible.
Thank you for the help!

rawlir - Attached is a pic of an original '47 Mercury passenger car cigar lighter fyi. The elements for the Fords and Mercs were the same, but the knobs were different, and I am not aware whether the same designs were used in the trucks and cars.

I will post another pic of an original late '40's model cigar lighter in hopes that it may be what you are looking for and someone can id it.

Second pic of a NOS '46-'48 Ford cigar lighter (assumed years based on knob and element styles). Perhaps someone with more knowledge and experience can confirm the exact years, models and perhaps car vs. truck for this knob - the element is known to be correct for '46-'48 but my documentation is incomplete on the chrome knob.

Steve,
Thank you so much for the reply. I believe I have seen previously the correct truck lighter in a picture which showed it Black with circles running around the knob. I wonder if there was a fancier knob in cars vs trucks? I sure appreciate your help and feedback!

Thank you!

The truck and car knobs are different. The Mercury and Ford truck dash knobs are also model dependent. The Mercury truck knob has the circles running around the knob while the Ford truck knobs are more plain. Canadian models may be different than US models.

The cigar lighter knob should match the other knobs on your instrument pane in style and color. Dennis Carpenter reproduces the Ford truck knobs, but does not reproduce the lighter knob. Here is a link to the car knobs that he reproduces.

You may want to post your question on the Ford Truck Forum. They are more into modified trucks than stock, but they do have alot of truck knowledge.

rawlir - attached is a pic of an original '47 Merc truck with a cigar lighter in the dash just behind the shifter fyi. The style appears consistent with the chrome knob posted for you earlier (i.e., smooth tapered shaft, knob screws on to the threaded shaft in the heating element, rounded head with concentric circles facing the front seat). Material appears to be black plastic.

NOS elements are available on ebay and from EFV8 members.

Hi, Steve,
THANK YOU for the replies. I notice in the photo there is no ashtray? Is the cig lighter the White knob? Is it possible that the lighter in this truck is aftermarket or added at a later date? I have a photo of what I believe to be the correct Ford knob and ashtray, the knob in that one is Black, I would like to send it you to, I don't know how to attach a photo here, can you give me your email address for you review? Thanks. Rick (rickr@lakesideind.com)

rawlir - I hate to pass the buck here but I am neither qualified to, nor confident in, accurately and without any doubt correctly answering your question specific to a '47 Merc truck. While I have seen a couple of quality '47 Merc trucks in person and several in photos (note the knobs were all black as you described in all cases I personally have observed) I have no reference documentation to call upon to say these were technically correct. My experience is focused on '46-'48 Mercury passenger cars.

Again, and as TomO notes, the knobs all matched in style and color (black) on the trucks I have observed.

Respectfully have to defer to former or current judges, more rounded and seasoned experts such as TomO, kubes40 ('Mike'), and others, EFV8 technical advisers and reference documentation offered on our EFV8 website here and/or through trusted Ford related sources to get you the best information possible. Suggest you follow their leads and advice and you'll get to where you need to go more quickly and accurately than with the limited 'observations' I can provide.

TomO gave you good advice regarding Carpenter (as well as posting your question on the truck forum) - perhaps a call to 'Vince' at Carpenter would be a good starting point for you (if needed after consulting with EFV8 resources, technical advisers & documentation) to confirm what is technically correct. Carpenter also has a fairly strong inventory of NOS parts (not listed on their website) and may have a technically correct original knob for you. I do know they have at least 1 (one) period correct cigar lighter element in their NOS inventory but be prepared - $$$s! You can buy a period correct, original NOS lighter with knob for a Ford or Merc passenger car on ebay (both available today - just checked) for ~$25 and you'll have the element and should then just need to source the knob. Vince also has an extensive portfolio of resources external to Carpenter that may be able to help you as well.

Btw - for some years the knobs had the threaded studs imbedded in the plastic and the knob scr*w*d into the heating element. For others, such as my '47 Merc pass car, the threaded stud is incorporated in the heating element and the knob screws on to it. I mention this as you should ask the question as to what you may be receiving whether you are sourcing the knobs and heating elements independent of one another or not. Not sure which style would be technically correct for your truck.

Well said Steve.

I still don't know if he wants a USA Ford truck lighter, a Canadian Ford truck lighter or a Mercury truck lighter.

On the truck forum, it was posted that a lighter was not a factory option for the USA trucks.

Going back to his original post it looks like Ford truck - US vs Canadian uncertain. Looks like I may have complicated it with my Merc focus over the course of the discussion though being posted originally here in the Merc section had me somewhat biased (subconciously) in this direction. Apologies here.
