Has anyone had success in changing an Optima battery in one of the Ford cases?

Yes, many of us have done exactly that. Optima has increased the height of their battery however, so the 2LF case is now 3/8" too short. The 2HF case works just fine.

I made wooden box that fit the battery pan and hold down in my '47, then put an Optima inside. I used "bead board" for the sides, and routed the top to resemble the "real" battery. A set of caps from an old battery and a coat of semi gloss black paint completed the illusion. Very few who have looked under the hood caught the difference. If you don't show your cars, it is a lot cheaper than an original case adapted for the purpose.
