Hey Guys ! I have a '52 F1 , and my buddy has a '50 F1. Both trucks have 8BA's in them , and were that way when we purchased them . Is that what would have come in them originally , or would they have come w/8RT's ? Thanks - FF

In the case of pickups the 8BA was the motor of choice in the F-1's. The 8RT designation was the head and not the block. They were a lower compression head and mostly used in the big trucks. In the case of commercial Ford vehicles they were put together with whatever came down the assembly line. Ford was a lot more particular with the cars.

The 100 h.p. V-8 engine in the trucks was designated 8RT. Sometimes the truck heads had 8BA on them (this could be because they were replaced at some point later in life). But the 8RT and 8BA heads were all the same. However, the engines in the trucks had external parts that were different than those on the car engine. For example, the carburetor and air cleaner (because of how the air cleaner mounts), the oil pan, the dip stick, the later engine mounts, the water pumps (later because the car belts and engine mounts changed), the belts (later) and the fans and fan mount were different. The oil filler tube was a different length. Internally the 8RT and the 8BA were the same except for the oil pick-up tube (different oil pan). Also, the engines were painted different colors. There were probably other differences, but they were essentially the same engine. Some people will say the last iteration of the flathead V-8 engine came out in 1949, but the 8RT came out in the 1948 trucks. The 8BA came out in the 1949 cars. Richard

To be clear on 51F1's excellent post, the 8BA did come from the factory in F1 trucks. The 8RT typically showing up in the larger series trucks. Kirk

t think that y'all misunderstood. The 8RT was the small truck V-8. The 8BA was the Ford car V-8. Richard

My understanding was always that 8BA's were in 1948-1951 F-1's.The 1952 F-1's came out with 8RT's.I have an original 1952 with a 8RT engine. The truck engines also ran the wider belts than the car engines and had the clean out in the bottom of the oil pan.

Sorry Kirk, but the 8BA was a car engine. The F-1 small V-8 engines were 8RT from 1948 through 1952. The head castings may say 8BA, but that doesn't matter. 8RT and 8BA heads were the same. Henry used whatever was in the parts bin What makes a truck engine an 8RT are the unique accessories (see my original post, above). The larger flathead V-8 truck engines, that I recall were Lincoln engines, were designated the 8EQ. These were used in some F-7 and F-8 trucks. And don't forget that there were two flathead 6-cylinder engine series too. These flathead engines were replaced in 1952 with new OHV engines. Richard
