I have a rear axle gear oil leak at both rear wheel drums. I pulled both rear drums and didn't see any seals at the end of the axles.I was told the axle seals are located at the opposite end of the axles towards the rear differential end. Is a seal available that could correct the leak at the drum side of the axles. It would save me from removing the entire rear axle from the car. Or would that cause a drag on the axles because the axle housings would be able to fill up with gear oil. Thanks, Joe

The seals are inside the housings near the ends. You have to remove the housings to change them.

Be sure when you remove the housing to replace the seals you note the thickness of the paper gaskets on each side (they are probably different) and replace them with new gaskets of the same thickness. Of course this assumes the wear pattern on the gears is good. These paper gaskets are part of the adjustment of the rear end. You also might want to work with someone that has the tool to replace the seal as the right tool makes the job a lot easier. Maybe your local V8 club would have the tool to loan? Charlie Stephens
