when i mount the top brackets to the front bow there is a space between the bow and the bracket. 1/8",,uneven,, did they use a bedding compound to take up the space or should i make a spacer..Planning on buying a L&B top ,,can anyone recomend an installer around southern Mass.

The three brackets should bolt flush against the wood bow - NO spacers. If yours do no fit flush there is an issue with either the bow and / or the brackets.

Every front header bow that I have installed has had to be fitted, requiring some reshaping before it could be installed. Be sure it has the embedded nuts in the right position, and pockets for the top dowels in the windshield header. The best one I have found is at LeBaron Bonney. My catalog doesn't show one for 1940, but it would be worth inquiring.
